Lumpoon, the "Oldest Existing" city in the kingdom, is a small province to the south near Chiangmai. You may want to make this a full day or 3 - 4 hour trip. Most interesting places are in the old city or its suburb, and the south side of the province. The trip can be based on two areas as follows:
Baan Paen "Hat Maker Village" (bamboo and palm leaves are used). Further south of Pazang district, see the way of life of Karen Hilltribe village (Khannard and Huay Lah areas). Also, visit Prabaat Taag-Pha, Buddha's footprint, and Cotton Weaving cottage industries.
After lunch, places to visit in the following order: Goo Shaang and Goo Mah--Cemetery of Queen Jarmmathaewee's elephant & horses. Wat Jarmmathaewee--Jedee or pagoda containing Queen Jarmmathaewee's remains. Wat Mahawan -- about 1300 years old, built by Queen Jarmmathaewee. Wat Pra Yuen -- a standing Buddha image, about 700-800 years old. Finally, Wat Prathart Haripoonshai -- Temple with beautifully-gilded Jedee (pagoda) which contains Buddha's relics, about 1500 years old. |
