Borsang Village has earned a worldwide reputation for transforming the ordinary into the exotic, the humdrum into something magnificent. The skill -- some call it "magic" of its artisans is arguably best manifested by the way they transform the lowly saa paper umbrellas into fabulous parasols sought after by many visitors.
Borsang Village is a rural village by all means and counts, but, there are neither farmers nor buffaloes to fill your sight. Instead, on a regular quiet day, you see stores after stores of various arts and crafts: woodcarvings silver, fans, knickknacks, hilltribe dolls, umbrellas, etc., at least on half of the kilometer long village.
Borsang umbrellas come in all sizes and colors. Its frames and handles are made of bamboo, while the coverings are made of other materials, the most famous being "saa" paper. But satin, cotton and Chinese brown paper are also used.
What makes a Borsang umbrella extraordinary is its "individual" design. At the village, young artists work all day painting umbrellas with floral and scenic designs. Nothing pre-planned. Every stroke is serendipitous. But all so expertly done you wouldn't believe these artists have never attended any formal arts school. |
